About

You know what Money is – but what the heck is a Merc?

In Roman Mythology, Mercury is the god of trade.  I believe you need to treat your Money like it’s your trade… you know, like it’s an actual business.  I know so many smart people who are amazing at their jobs, but suck at their own finances.  Personal finance is far from rocket science, especially for young people.  But it’s so important for setting up the rest of your life, and a little bit of focus and knowledge can go a long way.  I also believe that your path through life is made up of little, seemingly insignificant decisions (or lack of decisions).  If people can make the right ones at the right time, they will but 1000 times better off, especially when it comes to Money.

So with that in mind, let me introduce myself….

Hi, my name is Alex Benke.  I’m a graduate of Cornell University from a couple more years ago than I like to think.  I currently work in Finance and Technology at a major bank in NYC, and live in New Jersey.

While I have many interests, including rock climbing, multi-day hiking treks, photography, wine and programming (no particular order!), I have also developed a keen interest in personal financial planning.  I spent 2006 getting my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(TM) designation, and the following year working as a financial planner in a small practice in NJ.  I went from knowing nothing about financial planning except that I should save more to being ‘certified’ to help others plan their finances – and hopefully achieve their life goals.  Although I no longer get paid to work directly in the personal planning field, my interest in financial planning continues to grow, I hope that others may still benefit from my knowledge.  So I welcome you to come along for a ride, to make that first little decision to pay more attention to your finances NOW.  Your 20s and 30s are the most important years to start planning your financial future, because your decisions during these years will affect your life later on more than any other time.

I hope you find my posts here useful and interesting.  I recommend starting here.  Please leave me a comment with your thoughts, and feel free to always Ask Me a Question.
